The luxury imprint of the Marriott Hotel Group has this week announced it plans to open the doors of its first private island project, the JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa in 2015
Marriott International has this week announced that the long-awaited JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa is finally set to open on a private island in the Venice Lagoon in March 2015. The 266-room island resort will form the luxury chain’s first venture in Italy and looks set to become a world-class addition to its global portfolio of 59 luxury properties.
Tucked away amongst the expansive private gardens and olive groves of Isola Sacca Sessola, the JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa will feature 266 guest rooms and suites designed by renowned Matteo Thun & Partners of Milan. As well as offering exceptional comfort and refined style, it is hoped that the tranquil and private setting will ensure guests to relax and rejuvenate in style.
In keeping with the JW brand’s emphasis on leisure and luxury, the island resort will include an exclusive spa and health club as well as exceptional dining experiences in an array of restaurants and bars. A beautifully restored church forms a further highlight, and is certain to attract a fair share of romantics looking to stage weddings and other special events.
Boasting over 13,000 square feet of meeting space across a variety of meeting rooms, the island looks set to appeal not only to leisure guests, but with the MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) market, too – providing a private professional environment just minutes away from Venice’s commercial heart – Mercerie.
“Introducing JW Marriott to Venice is an exciting time for the brand as the destination continues to be one of the most desirable in the world, famous for its stunning architecture, art, and culture,” said Amy McPherson, president and managing director for Marriott International in Europe. “We are delighted to offer our guests the distinctly unique setting of Sacca Sessola coupled with the elegance and intuitive service synonymous with the JW Marriott brand.”
“Northern Italy’s Venetian Lagoon is one of the world’s most picturesque destinations, and we are thrilled to bring the JW Marriott brand to such an iconic and thriving location,” added Mitzi Gaskins, vice president & global brand manager for JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts. “We look forward to bringing our guests’ passion points of Culinary, Culture and Well-Being to life at this beautifully appointed property through authentic, unique and enriching travel experiences.”
The man-made Isola Sacca Sessola is one of the largest islands in the Venetian lagoon and covers an area of roughly 40 acres. After being established towards the end of the 19th century, it previously formed home to a series of hospitals. Today, just 15 minutes by boat from the historic heart of Venice, St Mark’s Square, the island offers unique access to the city’s cultural gems.
