Private Island Owner Gives Away Island
The Mahone Islands Conservation Association once again has cause to celebrate after finalizing an agreement to bring yet another private island into the public sphere. This time however, the latest addition to their ever-expanding protected zone is not the result of a frantic fundraising campaign, but rather a gift from an enthusiastic supporter.
The island in question – Goat Island – was generously donated to the conservation group by its former owner, John McLennan. Despite once being listing the island for CAD 25,000, McLennan decided that the best option for his former island escape was to bestow it to the province for the benefit of future generations.
Goat Island
Located on the entrance to Nova Scotia’s picturesque Mahone Bay Harbour, Goat Island has long since been known as an ideal spot for taking in the beautiful surroundings and enjoying a picnic. Indeed, former owner McLennan was such a fan of the surroundings that he chose to keep them in their natural state throughout his ownership.
And, despite once being placed on the market for CAD 25,000, the natural state of beautiful 4 acre island will now be preserved forever, after McLennan took the decision to donate the island to the Province – all for the benefit of the local wildlife and for future generations of Nova Scotians.
Another Private Island in Public Hands
The agreement for the donation of Goat Island to the province of Nova Scotia was finalized earlier this month, much to the delight of Mahone Island Conservation Association Chairman John Meisner, who in a brief statement, thanked and acknowledged McLennan for his generous act.
The island will now be protected by a Stewardship Agreement between the organization and the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources.
