The 1,800-acre Peter Island Resort and Spa, the largest privately-owned isle in the BVI, has long been renowned for its delicious seasonal cuisine and top gourmet chefs.  The resort’s two unique restaurants (plus a wine-tasting room and drink lounge), range from traditional European elegance to breezy Caribbean chic, and are famous for serving up an ever-changing array of unforgettable dishes. The relaxed Deadman’s Bar and Grill, a beachside spot with wide Caribbean views, is famous for its decadent racks of ribs and authentic wood oven-fired pizzas.

Peter Island’s signature Tradewinds Restaurant offers a sumptuous menu fusing the best of Caribbean and Continental flavours, including evening fine dining and a weekly buffet of locally-caught seafood, fresh fruits, and a variety of meat-carving stations. Of course, Tradewinds has the difficult task of not allowing the view to overshadow the menu – found on the island’s hillside, the restaurant offers epic vistas of the Drake Channel and nearby islands. Peter Island’s own top chefs had tough competition in July, however – the island hosted a friendly week-long cooking competition sponsored by the Texas Beef Association, Certified Angus Beef, and Veuve Clicquot, among others.

Now in its second year, July’s Bubbles & BBQ Guest Chef Event was composed of four unique experiences; a Champagne reception to meet and greet the chefs, a BBQ cook-off on the beach, the luxurious Winemaker’s Dinner, and a cooking class hosted by celebrity chef Jay McCarthy, known around the world as the “cowboy chef” for his home-spun Texan flair and love of his state’s famous beef. At other events, he has been the guest celebrity chef of the U.S. Meat Export Federation; perfect for Peter Island, which is the top consumer of Angus beef in the Caribbean.  Now, McCarthy is top chef for the six-restaurant chain Group970, all based in the exclusive Vail Valley, Colorado.

According to an article in Eater magazine, the Bubbles and BBQ Event was an unqualified success, and certainly took a lot of planning – a heavy 1,100 lb meat smoker was even imported from America for the event, trucked from Texas to Miami, and then sent via shipping container to the BVI. Perfect for the beach BBQ, the smoker was used by McCarthy to create his famous brisket, infused with local flavor by firing the smoker with fragrant local woods like cashew and mango.

The lucky reviewer at Eater, who visited the island for the event, found the Winemaker’s Dinner by far the most impressive; headed by McCarthy and his team of chefs, attended by just 30 guests, and held in the island’s high-perched Falcon’s Nest Villa, it was an incomparable six-course feast of quail, sugar-cured beef, gourmet macaroni and cheese and the BVI National Culinary Team’s award-winning banana-and-chocolate brownie desert, served with a uniquely spicy ginger-and-avocado ice cream.

For those who wish to taste the flavours of Peter Island for themselves, the island offers several distinguished options for accommodation – three private villas – Falcon’s Nest, Crow’s Nest, and Hawk’s Nest – are perched on the hillside, and the beautifully-designed hotel has a choice of ocean view or standard guest suites. The resort can host a maximum of 200 people on the sprawling island at one time, and two of its white-sand beaches are reserved for guests only, ensuring a luxurious sense of privacy. The recipient of numerous awards, including those from World Travel, Condé Nast and Travel+Leisure, the resort has since inception been dedicated to continually enhancing the experience of its guests; a place for unforgettable holidays and Caribbean memories to be treasured always.
