Whilst Private Island News is certain that Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has a lot of surprises in store for fiancé Brad Pitt’s 50th birthday, it seems that a private island is not yet on the shopping list.

For days now, the gossip columns have been awash with reports that star Angelina Jolie has splashed out an incredible USD 21.5 million dollars out on a heart-shaped private island in Upstate New York in a bid to surprise her fiancé and occasional co-star, Hollywood heart-throb, Brad Pitt.
British tabloid newspaper The Daily Mirror was at the forefront of the gossip, quoting an unknown source who claimed that Jolie had bought the 11 acre Petra Island as a birthday present for Pitt, who is set to turn 50 next month. According to the supposed source, Jolie was “really impressed” by the island and arranged a viewing as soon as she heard the island was on the market.”
Private Island News can confirm that the rumours are completely unfounded, however, and that Petra Island remains on the market for its actual asking price of USD 19.9 million. The daughter of the island’s owners was quick to deny the reports of Jolie’s interest, stating: “I don’t have any idea where that [report] came from. The property is still on the market and so far no-one has come forward.”
Despite the owners’ denials, the story has spread through the international press like wildfire, with many otherwise reputable sources sharing the story without checking the facts. At the time of going to press, Private Island News has found only a handful of journalists who have done their homework and contacted the island in question, raising questions about how and why this story has spread.
Surrounded by unspoiled nature and home to two sprawling properties designed by Pitt’s favourite architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, the Lake Mahopac island, located roughly 50 miles from New York City, certainly seems to be the perfect match for the self-confessed architecture addict.
And yet, whilst the idea certainly isn’t unreasonable – Pitt’s previous birthday presents include a cascading waterfall with space to design a dream home above – sources close to the property were quick to question the compatibility of Petra Island, suggesting that for a high-profile couple such as “Brangelina”, a more secluded island might be a better option.
