Island Market

Ireland: Now’s the time to buy a private island in Ireland

For many people, owning a private island remains a dream. This year however, it appears there are a number of very affordable islands for sale in Ireland, for even under EUR 200’000,  making now the time to buy!
Ireland is surrounded by hundreds of islands, which range in size but also in scope, because some have been developed and others remain untouched and uninhabited. Buying an island is a very personal affair and comes down to what buyers are looking to do with the island.

Though many often associate island ownership with great wealth and glamour, there are plenty of islands that belong in other categories and offer everything from private beaches, walking trails, luxury or simple properties, to historical ruins and adventure islands, where tents are pitched and nature is left to its own devices.

In an article in the Irish Times, the author talks with a few Irish estate agents, who tell of the increasing trend of foreign investors who have the funds to purchase these private islands. The article also highlights the fact that islands take years to sell, because of restrictions, such as acquiring building permits to develop the islands.
Some of the islands for sale can be found off the coast of west Corke, the Shannon Estuary and in Donegal, and County Clare, such as Mutton Island.
