Caribbean: Barack Obama Enjoys Post-Presidency Private Island Vacation

Just days after Private Island News reported on Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s controversial sojourn to the Bahamas, it appears another statesperson has caught the private island bug.

  • Former US President Barack Obama said goodbye to the White House in style, swapping the grey skies of Washington for the sun-soaked British Virgin Islands
  • Mr Obama was briefly spotted at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport in Tortola before boarding a boat to travel to their final destination: Necker Island
  • As well as enjoying some well-deserved relaxation, the former President and his family took to the water to test out a series of high-octane watersports

Private Island Vacation for the Obamas

Just days after departing the White House, Barack Obama and his family departed on their first post-presidential vacation, flying into the Caribbean to enjoy a holiday on Necker Island, a 78-acre luxury private island in the British Virgin Islands, owned by British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson.

Arriving into Tortola via private jet on January 23rd 2017, the former President appeared not to have a care in the world. After making time to take photos with the BVI border officials, the Obamas were whisked on a small rib boat before making the brief transfer to their luxurious island destination.

Promise Made Good on Long Overdue Vacation

It’s fair to say that the former Leader of the Free World made good on his vow to treat his wife, Michelle, to an extra special holiday upon leaving the White House. And indeed, based on the many happy photos circulating in the international press, we get the feeling that this particular private island holiday may even have been worth the wait.

Capable of hosting up to 34 guests across the spectacular Great House and a series of Balinese Cliffside residences, it’s no wonder Necker Island has cemented its status as one of the world’s ultimate private island rentals. Blessed with beautiful beaches, a sensual spa and a myriad of exciting activities – the island truly offers something for everyone.

Kite Surfing and Watersports Fun

One of the things that President Obama was most keen to try out on the island was the incredible array of cutting edge watersports equipment.

After security reasons caused him to put his passion for watersports on hold, President Obama was understandably keen to make up for lost time, diving head first into a two-day crash course in kite surfing. After a spluttering start, the Hawaii native proved to be a natural, soon beating his host and kite surfing veteran over a 100 m dash.

Gracious in defeat, Branson was full of praise for the former President and offered the following statement on his blog: “It was a huge honour to be able to invite President Barack and Michelle Obama down to the British Virgin Islands for a complete break after Barack finished his second term as President and the family left the White House.”
