Hayman Island Resort has just unveiled some stunning images of a penthouse suite created by designer Diane von Furstenberg, and it’s sure to make the must-visit list for plenty of adventurous fashionistas. Famous for her easy-to-wear wrap dresses in vivid tropical and animal prints, it was a ideal match for DVF to decorate a suite at one of Northern Australia’s most exclusive private island resorts. With an exotic, breezy charm, her large penthouse has an atmosphere that pairs perfectly with the island’s lush nature.

At a vast 17,223 square feet, the Hayman penthouse sleeps up to four, offers full butler service, and is certainly a way to see the Whitsundays in style. It took six months to transform the two-bedroom suite into DVF’s personal vision, featuring a contemporary palate of sandy beige walls, brilliant white wooden trim, and bleached European oak flooring. Here, the muted background allows the unique decorative elements to shine – not to mention the incredible ocean view from the suite’s long wraparound balcony.

Many of the beautiful pieces of artwork in the penthouse come straight from DVF’s personal photography, taken on her travels around the world, and the rooms are filled with these types of intimate touches. There are plenty of prints and fabrics that would not look out of place on one of her dresses – wild Ikat-style couches, a zebra-print rug, and splashy floral pillows and curtains, to name just a few.

The most striking part of the suite, however, might just be the bathroom. Finished in a neutral, spa-like tile, it was designed with complete relaxation in mind. The fine stone accents were sourced from the high-end Australian bathware designer Apaiser, including the washbasins and large free-standing bathtub. For added serenity, the room privately looks out onto an elegant stone-walled garden complete with tropical ferns.

After six months of hard work, the resort celebrated the completion of the Diane von Furstenberg Penthouse with an opening reception, after which DVF reportedly extended her stay a few extra days to enjoy the island further. It’s clear that for her, there is a personal connection with Hayman. “It was such a pleasure to work with Hayman,” she said. “It is such a special destination and I hope my design will enhance the beauty of the island and give the people staying in the DVF Penthouse a memorable moment.”
